ABOUT 5TH GRADE

The 5th Grade course is aimed at preparing students aspiring to excel in academics through advanced learning, review and practice of mathematics, verbal, writing and grammar skills necessary for 5th grade. The class meets once a week for 2.5 hours on every scheduled weekend. All course work will be complemented by quizzes, homework assignments and periodic tests.

This course integrates the foundational requirements of the Interactive Assessment Math Aptitude Test a placement test for pre-algebra course work in Loudoun County schools. SOL Prep is part and parcel of the curriculum.

Students will attain sufficient proficiency to solve related word problems and in applying language skills.

Below is a high level course content for Mathematics, Verbal, Grammar & Writing.

MATHEMATICS

Arithmetic : Fractions, decimals, percentages, conversions and mathematical operations, divisibility rules, factoring

Pre-Algebra : Variables, expressions, Linear and inverse relationships

Geometry : Coordinate plane, lines, intersections, angles, triangles, circles, polygons, perimeter and area

Probability and Statistics: Data interpretation, graphs, tables, Mean, Median, Mode, and Basic Probability 

ENGLISH

Vocabulary: Meaning and use of new words

Reading comprehension: Understanding meaning, purpose and conclusions of small paragraphs

Writing: Well structured and grammatically correct expression of an idea in a small paragraph and essay

Grammar: Punctuation, parts of speech, parts and types of sentences, subjects & predicates, direct & indirect objects

OUR IMPACT

This course integrates the foundational requirements of the IOWA Algebra Aptitude Test (IAAT), a placement test for pre-algebra course work, administered in 5th grade students.

Students will acquire methods and techniques which will help them learn, retain, and apply the knowledge, positioning them to perform better at school. Students will be equipped to perform well in SOL.
